What does the meaning of "vitamin?"

Vitamins can be described as organic compounds found in food. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients from foods we eat. Vitamins are not made by the body, so they must be obtained through food.

There are two types vitamins: water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble vitamins dissolve easily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. You can find vitamin D, E K, A, beta carotene, and other fat-soluble vitamins.

Vitamins are classified according to their biological activity. There are eight major types of vitamins:

  • A - Vital for normal growth and maintaining good health.
  • C - important for proper nerve function and energy production.
  • D - Essential for healthy teeth and bones.
  • E - needed for good vision and reproduction.
  • K - Essential for healthy muscles and nerves.
  • P - Essential for strong bones and teeth.
  • Q - Aids in digestion and absorption.
  • R - Red blood cells are made from red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance for vitamins (RDA) varies based on gender, age, and physical conditions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets RDA values.

For adults aged 19 and older, the RDA for vitamin B is 400 micrograms daily. However, pregnant women need 600 micrograms per day because it is important for fetal development. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Babies under one-year old require 700 mg per day. Between 9 and 12 years of age, however, this drops to 500 mg per day.

Children between the ages 1--18 years old who are overweight or obese require 800 micrograms per Day, while those who are overweight or obese need 1000 micrograms. To meet their nutritional needs, children underweight and obese require 1200 micrograms a day.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

Adults over 50 years of age need 2000 micrograms per day for general health. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding need 3000 micrograms per day due to increased nutrient requirements.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant, nursing or breastfeeding need more than the RDA. Pregnant woman need 4000 micrograms daily in pregnancy, and 2500 per day after childbirth. Breastfeeding mothers need 5000 mg per day when breastmilk is being produced.
